  1. 1905-1973. Dutch-born US astronomer, who made
  2. extensive studies of the solar system. He
  3. discovered included the atmospheres of the
  4. planet Mars and that of Titan, the largest
  5. moon of the planet Saturn. Kuiper was adviser
  6. to many NASA exploratory missions, and
  7. pioneered the use of telescopes on
  8. high-flying aircraft. The Kuiper Airborne
  9. Observatory, one such telescope, is named
  10. after him.
